“People seem to have a hard time separating art from life…”
Since Call Me By Your Name’s release, fans have clamoured for a real-life romance between its two lead stars, Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, due to their mesmerising chemistry.
Some fans are a little more, erm, passionate than others, and can’t seem to accept that both stars aren’t romantically involved.
Armie has addressed the rumours that he “prefers Elio”, with a screenshot of a message he received from a fan about his relationship with Timothée.
“You know. Dick is better. Elio is better. Thimothee is better. We don’t like pussy. We don’t want to have a wife. Let’s fuck with boys,” said the fan. “They are better you know? I’m sure that you prefer Elio, Timothee whatever. I mean I’ve seen how you look at him. I love you two.”
Armie responded with, “People seem to have a hard time separating art from life.”
We may not witness a relationship blossom between Armie and Timothée, but don’t worry – a Call Me By Your Name sequel has already been pitched!
“Dude, he broke down the whole script for us. I mean, it’s not a finished script, but he’s got all the ideas for it,” Armie told Indiewire.
“Luca’s all gung-ho about it, and by the way, if Luca’s doing it, I think we’re all gung-ho about it.”
He added: “You know, the experience of making the first one was so pure and beautiful that it wouldn’t matter how big my role was. If the same people are involved, I’d do it all over again.”
Director Luca Guadagnino confirmed that it will indeed be happening – despite contradictory reports – and even shared some information on the plot.
“I’m already conceiving the story with [author] André Aciman, and it’s gonna happen five or six years afterwards, almost in 1990,” he told USA Today from the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night. ”It’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone.”
Luca also confirmed that the film will “of course” reunite stars Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer as Elio and Oliver once again (phew!) – but it won’t be set ‘Somewhere in Northern Italy’ like the original.
“They’re gonna go around the world,” he added.
Luca initially teased us with a sequel last year when he told Gay Times: “Maybe in time we’ll be able to tell more stories about these people. I’ve spoken to André about that and, yeah, André is up for it.”
Back in January, Luca elaborated that a sequel would likely deal with the effects of the AIDS crisis – a point of contention among some critics, as the original failed to mention the disease at all, despite being set in the 1980s.
He also suggested that there could be a series of films set in a shared universe.
However, not everyone from the Call Me By Your Name team is so sure about the potential for a sequel.
The film’s screenwriter James Ivory cast doubt on a continuation of Elio and Oliver’s story, as he argued it’s “not possible” to make Timothée Chalamet look older.
“No one has contacted me,” he added. “You have to think, ‘Why does André Aciman think about that?’ It’s his creation. No one seems to know how he feels about it.”
Meanwhile, the film took home only one award at the Oscars last month – Best Adapted Screenplay – but it was enough to make history, as screenwriter James became the oldest person ever to win an Oscar.
Here’s everything we know about the Call Me By Your Name sequel so far.
