Warner Bros has released the magical teaser trailer for Barbie.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, the upcoming rom-com stars Margot Robbie as the title character, with Ryan Gosling as Ken.
Additional cast members include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Rhea Pearlman, Will Ferrell, Scott Evans, Connor Swindells and Emerald Fennell.
Ncuti Gatwa and Hari Nef have also been cast as alternate versions of Ken and Barbie, respectively.
The trailer is camp as hell, with Robbie towering over a faction of caveman-era children in a black and white swimsuit, Gosling preparing for battle alongside his fellow Ken’s and Liu leading a Grease-style dance number.
While little is known about the plot so far, Robbie previously told British Vogue: “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
Although Robbie acknowledged that the character evokes “a lot of nostalgic connections” and “comes with a lot of baggage”, she said: “But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.”
Barbie will be released in the US and the UK on 21 July 2023.
