Good news incoming: the nominees for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards are queer as hell.

While a majority of the categories are dominated by Taylor Swift and Post Malone with their number-one collaboration ‘Fortnight’, there’s a lot of rainbow representation here – particularly amongst queer female artists.

Following her meteoric rise to fame, Chappell Roan has earned two nominations for Best New Artist and MTV Push Performance of the Year for her rising smash ‘Red Wine Supernova’. It’s worth noting that ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, her breakout pop anthem currently vying for the top spot on various worldwide charts, is missing here because of the lack of visuals (Beyoncé’s impact?)

After entering her unapologetically queer era (queera?), Billie Eilish has landed two: ‘LUNCH’ for Video of the Year and her Barbie chart-topper ‘What Was I Made For?’ for Video for Good. The two-time Oscar-winner recently teamed up with Charli XCX on the remix for ‘Guess’, which is expected to top the charts in the UK this Friday.

Fresh off winning three Grammy Awards (amongst seven nominations) earlier this year – including Best New Artist – Victoria Monét has received two for her breakout solo hit ‘On My Mama’ under Push Performance and Best R&B.

Former GAY TIMES cover star Anitta appears twice in ‘Best Latin’ for ‘Mil Veces’ and her feature on Peso Pluma’s ‘BELLAKEO’.

Despite not releasing an album since 2022 with SOS, which broke a plethora of charts records on the Billboard 200, SZA is a five-time nominee for Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Best R&B for ‘Snooze’ and Best Collaboration and Best Hip-Hop for her appearance on Drake’s ‘Rich Baby Daddy’.

Joining her with five nods is Megan Thee Stallion: Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction for her Gwen Stefani-sampled earworm ‘BOA’, as well as Best Collaboration for ‘Wanna Be’ with GloRilla.

Additional LGBTQIA+ artists nominated include Doja Cat, Cardi B and Troye Sivan, with allies and fan-favourites of the community such as Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and RAYE.
