It’s that time of year again and the illustrious BRITs have rolled out their nominations. Good news: LGBTQ+ talent is most definitely in the spotlight.
Newcomers Wet Leg are leading the way (alongside superstar Harry Styles) with four nominations each.
The Isle of Wight alternative duo, Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, have made a name for themselves with their highly-praised sound. The rock band have earned nods for Best New Artist, Group of the Year, Best Rock/Alternative and Album of the Year.
Elsewhere, pop icons Sam Smith and Kim Petras earned a nomination for their hit song Unholy. Fast-rising icon Rina Sawayama was also included in the Best New Artist category.
The BRITs international categories include big names Beyoncé, Lizzo and Taylor Swift, who are leading nominations with two nods apiece.
While the winners of the BRITs are yet to be unveiled, British girl group Flo have been announced as winners of this year’s Rising Star award. Previous Rising Star winners include Adele, Florence and The Machine, Griff, and Sam Fender.
Last year, the BRIT Awards opted to scrap gendered categories and make the platform more accessible to identities that fall outside of the traditional view of gender.
The upcoming ceremony will be presented by comedian Mo Gilligan and take place live at the London O2 Arena on 11 February. Performances from Wet Leg and Sam Smith and Kim Petras have been confirmed.
