Call Me By Your Name sequel: Everything we know so far

Don’t try and tell us that you haven’t once thought about poor Elio every single day since seeing that heart-wrenching final scene in Call Me By Your Name as he sobs into an open fire.

Luca Guadagnino’s gay drama set in the Italian countryside in the summer of 1983 stole hearts across the globe when it was released in cinemas last year.

Oliver and Elio were portrayed perfectly on screen by Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet respectively, making us all wistful for our own love story to play out over a soundtrack of The Psychedelic Furs’ Love My Way.

But for those of you who have read André Aciman’s novel of the same name, which was adapted for the movie, you’ll know that that final scene isn’t where it stops on the pages.

Oliver and Elio’s romance lingers over them both for another two decades, which led us to ask Luca before the film was released last year if there were any plans to explore those years in future movies.

“Maybe in time we’ll be able to tell more stories about these people,” he told Gay Times. “I’ve spoken to Andre about that and, yeah, Andre is up for it.”

After scoring major awards season buzz – including a win for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2018 Academy Awards – it looks like those plans have been put into motion.

So without further ado, here’s everything we know so far about the sequel to Call Me By Your Name.

Call Me By Your Name 2: When will it be released?

Considering Call Me By Your Name has only just been released on DVD and Blu-ray, we have a few years to wait for the follow-up yet.

However, at the 2018 Academy Awards, director Luca Guadagnino revealed that the development stages of the film has begun.

“I’m already conceiving the story with André Aciman, and it’s gonna happen five or six years afterwards,” he told USA Today.

“It’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone.”

Luca added that they just need to finalise the script they are currently working on before they can figure out when filming could begin.

Judging by this news, a Call Me By Your Name sequel for 2019 could quite well be within the realm of possibility.

Call Me By Your Name sequel: Who is coming back for it?

There have been no official casting announcements about the sequel, but as you have seen above, director Luca Guadagnino is firmly on board with the project.

He also confirmed that both Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet will be back for round two, too.

Considering the actors’ onscreen chemistry as Oliver and Elio, fans will be happy to hear that they will be reunited. Peaches may not feel the same, however.

After Michael Stuhlbarg’s tear-inducing turn as Elio’s father Mr. Perlman during that talk in the movie, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for his return too.

Call Me By Your Name sequel: What will the plot be?

As we’ve already mentioned Aciman’s novel follows Oliver and Elio for another 20 years as they sporadically stay in touch following their magical summer together.

However, it sounds like Luca would rather focus on another period of their lives within the 1980s, rather than the movie being spanned over just a vast amount of time.

Call Me By Your Name is set in the summer of 1983 – just before the HIV/AIDS epidemic tragically tore through the LGBTQ community.

Luca has hinted the second instalment will be set five years later in 1988, and that the AIDS crisis will play a part in the plot.

“I think it’s going to be a very relevant part of the story,” Guadagnino told The Hollywood Reporter.

“I think Elio will be a cinephile, and I’d like him to be in a movie theatre watching Paul Vecchiali’s Once More. That could be the first scene [in the sequel].”

Luca added: “If the first one is a story of coming of age and becoming a young man, maybe the next chapter will be, what is the position of the young man in the world, what does he want – and what is left a few years later of such an emotional punch that made him who he is?”

Although Call Me By Your Name screenplay writer James Ivory threw doubt over plans of a sequel because “it’s not possible to make Timothée [Chalamet] look like he’s 40,” with the film being set five years later, those concerns won’t be a problem.

Elio is 17 years old in the original film, meaning he’ll be 22 in the sequel. Considering that’s the age of the Academy Award-nominated actor now, Timothée will be playing younger again in the follow-up.

Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino also teased that the sequel is unlikely to be set in the Italian countryside again, and will instead see the two characters travelling together.

“They’re gonna go around the world,” he said, confirming that some of the story will be set on the East Coast of America.

But in even better news, it might not stop at just the one sequel.

“These characters are so fantastic, and I want to know what happens to them,” Luca is quoted as saying. “Maybe it’s not a question of sequel, it’s a question of chronicling everyone in this film.”
