“Our leaders are letting us down. I’m running for Governor because we want our state back.”
Cynthia Nixon announced her candidacy for Governor of New York yesterday (19 March).
The American actress and activist is running as a Democrat, and will compete against reigning Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has filled the position since 2011.
Nixon is best known for her work in the entertainment industry, for which she has won a Grammy, two Tony’s and two Emmy’s, and for her role as Miranda Hobbes in the iconic HBO series, Sex and the City.
The series also spawned two highly-successful motion pictures of the same name, earning a combined total of nearly 700 million at the worldwide box office.

It looks like all the accolades weren’t enough, because the 51-year-old is now hoping to conquer the world of politics.
In her powerful announcement video, Nixon states: “New York is my home. I’ve never lived anywhere else. When I grew up here, it was just my mom and me in a one-bedroom fifth floor walk-up. Our leaders are letting us down. We are now the most unequal state in the country, with both incredible wealth and extreme poverty.”
She continues: “Together, we could show the entire country and the world that in the era of Donald Trump, New Yorkers will come together and lead our nation forward. I’m running for Governor because we want our state back.”
If elected, Nixon would make history by becoming the first woman and openly LGBTQ Governor of New York.
The election is set to take place in November.
