Original writer Pat Resnick is in talks to make the concept relevant for a contemporary audience.
Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are reportedly “eager” for a contemporary remake of their iconic 1980 film, 9 to 5.
The critically lauded comedy starred the three legendary stars as secretaries in a male-dominated workplace. After their sexist, egotistical boss blackmails one of the women into sleeping with him, they kidnap him and uncover his embezzlement scheme.
20th Century Fox’s remake will reportedly focus on three women who are subjected to harassment and chauvinism at work. They will turn to the original trio for help in overthrowing their sexist co-workers and gaining the upper hand against patriarchy.
Original writer Pat Resnick is in talks to make the concept relevant for a contemporary audience, and there are talks for her to team with a young writer, such as Rashida Jones. It will be produced by 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Resnick and Jonathan Baruch.
The #MeToo movement proved that male chauvinism and sexism is still rampant, so a remake of 9 to 5 is timely.
9 to 5 was an enormous hit upon release, inspiring a television series of the same name and a Broadway musical, with music and lyrics by Parton. The single by Parton also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, received an Academy Award nomination and two Grammy Awards.
Parton, Fonda and Tomlin sent fans into meltdown mode last year when they reunited onstage at the Emmy’s, and slammed Donald Trump.
“Well, back in 1980… we refused to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot,” said Fonda.
Tomlin added, to roaring applause from the audience: “And in 2017 we still refuse to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot.”
