Jax has broken her silence on the decisions from the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15.
Following in the footsteps of last season, the queens competed in a Lip Sync LaLaPaRuZa Smackdown, which culminated in the elimination of one contestant. (There will be spoilers in this article, just FYI).
After eight jaw-dropping rounds, featuring lip-sync tracks from artists such as Celine Dion, Fifth Harmony and Anitta, Jax succumbed to Anetra’s now-iconic duck walk to the beat of CeCe Peniston’s Finally and became the seventh queen to hear RuPaul’s dreaded “sashay away”.
Jax initially faced off against Mistress Isabelle Brooks to Taylor Dayne’s classic Tell It To My Heart, as well as Anetra and Luxx Noir London to The Right Stuff by Vanessa Williams, both of which she controversially lost.
In her exit interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jax revealed that she wasn’t surprised by RuPaul’s decision to save Anetra in their second smackdown “because of track record purposes”.
“In my brain I was like, I love Anetra, the bitch deserves to stay here. I want to be there, too, but, if anyone’s going to send me home, I’m happy it was her,” said Jax, after revealing that she was “shocked” over the first two lip-syncs she lost, particularly her first one against Mistress.
“I was shocked, of course, because it wasn’t like I was just going half-assed or anything,” she explained. “I really was going full force, this is the first round, you don’t want to have to keep going on and on in this roster. She’s a fierce entertainer, end of story. I was, however, shocked that I didn’t win that one.”
Although Jax was “blindsided” by Anetra’s decision to save Spice from lip-syncing in the final round, she “fully understood” why and there’s no “ill will” towards her.
“Knowing Anetra, me and her both come from athletic backgrounds, she did Tae Kwon Do, I was a gymnast and cheerleader, we don’t like to settle, we like to challenge ourselves,” she said.
“I fully understood the mindset of being like, okay, the girl wants a battle, we’re on a TV show right now, we’re going to give a battle. It wouldn’t be fair for someone as experienced as Anetra to go up against someone like Spice.”
The episode felt “all too familiar,” Jax continued, as a result of her friend and fellow lip-sync assassin, Jasmine Kennedie, suffering an eerily similar fate on season 14. Jax and Jasmine were widely considered the lip-syncers to beat on their seasons, although both lost their respective LaLaPaRuZa Smackdowns.
On how Jasmine responded to Jax’s elimination, she revealed: “She was like, “Girl, we’re twins!” When I was able to see her again, I was like, “Girl, it’s a journey, I know exactly how you feel right now.” Drag Race is something you can’t explain to anybody that hasn’t been through it.”
