Chi Chi DeVayne, RuPaul’s Drag Race season eight sweetheart who graced our screens again in All Stars 3, shocked us all last week when she revealed she had been struggling with her health during COVID-19.

Chi Chi, who stole our hearts through thrifty fashion and southern bell banter, updated us on her health complications she’s been having throughout this pandemic.

She took to the stage (or in this case, Instagram story) and revealed that she had been having trouble with her “breathing,” and “high blood pressure,” and although it was on everyone’s mind, she has tested negative for COVID-19.

These symptoms could indeed be the result of a kidney failure, which is yet to be confirmed.

From this, we have seen a bundle of queens reach out in order to support and help Chi Chi in this difficult time, including Trixie Mattel, Darienne Lake and The Vixen.

Even World Of Wonder, production company and creators of RuPaul’s Drag Race, have posted on Instagram, informing the fans of Chi Chi’s health complications and ways in which we, as a community, can help her through.

It’s clear that the pandemic has altered all of the amazing events 2020 had to offer, with a shift from live stage to Instagram live. For many queens, kings and queer performers out there, whose livelihood depends on the stage, this shift has hit catastrophically.

For Chi Chi however, her health scare couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the demand for online work increases. Assuming she was able to adapt the limitations of performing through the pandemic, she now has another hurdle in her way.

This information was given to us over a week ago. Chi Chi updated us on her hospital stay just yesterday, with a photo captioned, “one billion wires,” posted to her Instagram story.

Whilst being in alarming circumstances, it’s substantial to see Chi Chi taking reign of her health and seeking the correct medical advice, which has been a problem within the Black and minority ethnic community throughout this pandemic.

It is important that we seek help and look after ourselves, remembering that COVID-19 is not the only health threat in communities of colour.

Moreover, it is also important to support Black and POC artists more than ever, especially those who cannot perform.

There are many queens out there, but Chi Chi is one in a billion.

Several links to support Chi Chi have been posted alongside her videos and posts, by herself and other queens – see below.
