Disney have released a first look at Emma Stone’s transformation into Cruella de Vil.
Emma will play the iconic villain, who originally appeared in 1961 animated film One Hundred And One Dalmations, in the upcoming live-action origin story which is simply titled Cruella and will release in 2021.
Filming only began a few days ago, but Disney have already shared a first-look image of the Oscar-winning actress in character, and she looks unrecognisable (and incredible, we should add) as a more punk-rock version of Cruella.
The movie is to be set in 1980s London and will explore where Cruella’s hatred for animals comes from – and why she became so cruel.
Emma Thompson will also star as the Baroness, while Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser will play Cruella’s criminal sidekicks Jasper and Horace. I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie will helm the movie.
The iconic villain was originally voiced by Betty Lou Gerson in 101 Dalmatians, and was later portrayed by Academy Award nominated actress Glenn Close in two live-action adventures.
Close received universal acclaim for her performance, and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, so Emma has some pretty big (and no doubt fashionable) boots to fill.
Cruella follows other live-action remakes of classic Disney films, such as Maleficient, The Jungle Book, Cinderella and The Lion King.
Cruella is expected to release in cinemas on 28 May, 2021.
