Everything Everywhere All At Once triumphed at the SAG Awards on Sunday (26 February), cementing its place as the frontrunner for the upcoming Academy Awards in the process.

The Daniels’ queer sci-fi epic, which follows a Chinese immigrant (Michelle Yeoh) as she connects with parallel universe versions of herself to save the multiverse, won four awards – the most for any film in the SAG Awards’ history.

Yeoh triumphed over Viola Davis, Ana de Armas, Danielle Deadwyler and current frontrunner Cate Blanchett for Best Actress, while Ke Huy Quan took home Best Supporting Actor. They historically became the first Asian actors to win in individual categories.

Elsewhere, Jamie Lee Curtis beat out Angela Bassett, Hong Chau, Kerry Condon and her Everything Everywhere All At Once co-star Stephanie Hsu for Best Supporting Actress.

The film also won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, which is widely considered as the ceremony’s most prestigious award due to the absence of a ‘Best Film’ category.

In her speech, Yeoh acknowledged that she was up “against titans” in the category, adding: “Every one of you know, the journey, the rollercoaster ride, the ups and downs. But most important, we never give up.

“This is not just for me, this is for every little girl that looks like me. Thank you for giving me a seat at the table because so many of us need this. We want to be seen, we want to be heard.”

Curtis, who made light of her status as a “nepo baby”, which she has embraced, said: “I love acting, I love the job we get to do, I love being a part of a crew, part of a cast, I love what we do with each other, it’s such a beautiful job… what a dream.”

Quan, only the second Asian male actor to win a SAG Award, used his time on stage to celebrate increasing diversity in the entertainment industry.

“I quickly realised that this moment no longer belongs to me. It also belongs to everyone who has asked for change. The landscape looked so different now than before,” he told the crowd.

“So, thank you so much to all of you in this room and everyone who contributed to these changes.”

He continued: “To all those at home who are watching and struggling and waiting to be seen. Please keep on going, because the spotlight will one day find you. Thank you everyone for rooting for me. I will be rooting for you.”

Other notable winners include Jennifer Coolidge, who won Best Actress in a Drama Series for her iconic performance as Tanya McQuoid-Hunt in The White Lotus, and Jean Smart, who earned her second consecutive trophy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Deborah Vance in Hacks.

Evan Peters failed to win Best Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his acclaimed performance as Jeffrey Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Monster, with Sam Elliott emerging victorious for playing Shea Brennan in Paramount+’s Western 1883.
