Charli XCX and Drag Race star Cynthia Lee Fontaine have clashed on Twitter.
The unexpected drama first started when the Vroom Vroom singer shared her thoughts on her friend/frequent collaborator Kim Petras and her debut album Feed the Beast.
While Charli told her followers that she had yet to listen to the record, she did admit to reading Pitchfork’s review, which she described as “interesting.”
“I love Kim, and I think she’s exceptionally talented – I’ve seen her work. I’ve seen her write. I’ve seen her natural instinct. It’s very good. I think she’s in an interesting spot as an artist rn,” she explained via her Instagram Stories on 26 June.
“The way I see it is that she’s in a phase where commercial success is more important than wholeheartedly following her artistic instinct (perhaps?).”
Charli went on to say that she’s been in that position before, so she can recognise when someone else is in a similar spot.
“I think it’s a crucial phase that some of us need to experience to further access our own core and learn the lesson that our own voices are the most powerful and convicted in the room, despite all the additional opinions that are also always circling around,” she added.
While Charli’s response was neutral and supportive of Kim, Drag Race star Cynthia described the Roll With Me singer’s statement as “cringe”.
“So haven’t heard it yet and she decided to make a comment based on someone’s review? Cringe,” the season eight star tweeted on 27 June.

However, Cynthia’s tweet didn’t go unnoticed.
On 7 July, Charli returned to Twitter to give further insight into her initial statement and deny the Drag Race star’s assumption.
“No. I chose to comment not on another persons review but on my experience of Kim as an artist whom I’ve collaborated with many times. Artists are so much more than singular albums,” she explained.
“Great artists generate culture and conversation that transcends music. I am giving my thoughts on Kim’s current position as an artist in 2023 through the lense of my own personal experiences. Don’t try with your fuck shit with me.”
Cynthia then delivered one final response, stating: “Don’t you dare trying to teach me how artistry work. I’m aware how it works.
“But the music bussines and culture and interaction derives not just only on comments between colleagues, but also your own criteria, point of view and personal expertise. Do better ignorant!”
In the aftermath of Charli and Cynthia’s online beef, an array of fans flocked to Twitter to share their thoughts on the shocking incident.
One fan wrote: “Charli XCX arguing with Cynthia Lee Fontaine was not on my 2023 bingo card.”
Another fan tweeted: “Charli XCX beefing Cynthia Lee Fontaine is something Threads could never even dream of replicating.”
Here’s hoping that Charli and Cynthia can move past this misunderstanding.
