FX has announced a brand new LGBTQ documentary series.
Pride will be a six-part series that documents the fight for LGBTQ rights and acceptance over the past 60 years, with each episode directed by a different filmmaker from across the LGBTQ spectrum.
News of the series broke on Tuesday (6 August) as the US cable network FX announced a series of five new docuseries and one feature documentary, including a series about Tupac Shakur and another about women in comedy.
“Pride is a six-part documentary series hailing from Christine Vachon’s Killer Films and Refinery29, chronicling the fight for LGBTQ civil rights in America as seen through the lens of our national history and the biggest pop culture and political events.
“Each part directed by a different renowned LGBTQ helmer, Pride is about all of us, and the awesome, heartbreaking and heroic story surrounding the LGBTQ fight for freedom over the last 60 years in America.
“Pride is executive produced by Vachon and Sydney Foos of Killer Films and Refinery29’s Amy Emmerich, Stone Roberts and Alex Stapleton.”
FX has been leading the way when it comes to representation for the LGBTQ community over recent years.
American Horror Story and American Crime Story – both from creator Ryan Murphy – have heavily featured queer characters, while Pose has been winning critical acclaim and Emmy nominations with its groundbreaking storylines.
Centring around the ballroom scene in 1980s New York City, the show assembled the largest cast and crew of trans actors, producers and writers a drama series has ever seen. So it’s a pretty big deal.
Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX, said the network prides itself on giving artists a platform to showcase their “individual, uncompromising vision” and will continue to do so with its new documentary series and features.
“We are now honoured to partner with these new teams to create docuseries and features that will join FX’s legacy of fearless and groundbreaking programming,” he added.
