Grimes took to Instagram to announce her new album Miss_Anthropocene is on the way and will be an allegory for the end of the world…
…through her conceptual character of the Goddess of Climate Change. Describing the character, Grimes says she is “a psychedelic, space-dwelling demon, a beauty queen who relishes the end of the world,” adding that she’s “composed of Ivory and Oil”.
She also revealed that previous artwork shared on her Instagram was a depiction of the character.

The inspiration to characterise the end of the world in this way came from “godly personifications of horrific concepts, for example Mars as the Roman god of war”.
She went on to tease that there may be an EP or separate singles before the album’s release, to please fans who prefer her synth-based music, before moving on to the ‘mostly ethereal nu-metal’ sound we last heard on the single We Appreciate Power featuring HANA – a song that celebrates the rise and takeover of artificial intelligence through the eyes of a pro-AI propaganda girl group.
The name for the album comes from misanthrope, meaning “a person who dislikes humankind and avoids human society”, and Anthropocene, the current epoch defined as “the period of time during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate change”.
Grimes promises each song will be a different embodiment of human extinction, as depicted through pop-star demonology.
“Climate change is something I’m only ever confronted with in a sad/guilty way, my goal is to make climate change fun… everybody loves a good villain, so maybe it’ll be a bit easier to look at if it can exist as a character and not just abstract doom,” she said.
Well if the world is ending, it may as well end with a party.
