HBO Max and A24 are developing a comedy pilot from Megan Stalter.
According to Variety, Church Girls is a half-hour comedy that follows Beth Parker (Stalter), a “20-year-old Christian lesbian as she wrestles with her sexuality and faith in God, while entering adulthood in suburban Ohio”.
The series will be based on Stalter’s own experiences.
Since 2021, the star has received acclaim for her role in HBO Max’s comedy Hacks, which follows a legendary comedian (Jean Smart) as she reluctantly teams up with a Gen-Z writer (Hannah Einbinder) to revive her career.
Stalter, who received viral fame thanks to her instantly iconic “Hi gay!” Pride Month video, co-stars as Kayla; the nepotistic yet endearingly incompetent assistant to Ava’s manager Jimmy (Paul W. Downs).
Following the season two finale of Hacks, HBO Max announced a third season for the Emmy Award-winning comedy.
Sarah Aubrey, the Head of Originals at HBO Max, told the Hollywood Reporter: “We congratulate Hacks’ extraordinarily gifted executive producers and cast, and our partners at Universal Television.
“We are overjoyed at the audience and press response to the new season and glad to give viewers more of this gorgeous, hilarious, moving show.”
Earlier this year, it was announced that Stalter will lead her first film with Hannah Pearl Utt’s dark comedy Cora Bora, which is also set to star Jojo T. Gibbs, Manny Jacinto, Ayden Mayeri, Thomas Mann, Chrissie Fit, Andre Hyland and Heather Morris.
Per Variety: “The indie centers on Cora (Stalter), who senses her open relationship is on the rocks.
“When the struggling musician and messy millennial goes home to Portland to win her girlfriend back, she realizes it’s much more than her love life that needs salvaging.”
In her GAY TIMES cover interview alongside Einbinder, Stalter revealed that all of her characters and “personas on stage” are a fundamental part of who she is.
“I feel like I play an extremely confident woman who’s secretly nervous, which is what I am. At the same time, for some reason, which is kind of what Kayla is on the show,” she admitted.
“I was talking to someone the other day about how, on stage, it’s almost the only time my brain can rest. It sounds so cheesy but you go somewhere else, right? I feel like I’m not thinking about emails or anything else, I’m truly out of my mind in the best way.”
Of her creative process, she continued: “I got this mug yesterday that said, ‘Embrace your motherhood,’ and I’m like, ‘That’s a character.’ I had to get it. I feel like with all the characters, I’m making fun of part of myself.
“I make fun of the mother because inside, there’s somebody who wants to have like, six kids.”
The first two seasons of Hacks are available to stream in the UK on Prime Video.
