It looks like we finally have a tiny bit of LGBTQ representation in a galaxy far, far away…
Ahead of the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story next week – which follows the escapades of a young Han Solo years before he meets Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa in A New Hope – the writers have confirmed a piece of information about one of the franchise’s most iconic characters.
A young Lando Calrissian will be portrayed by Donald Glover in the forthcoming prequel, but the role was originally made famous by Billy Dee Williams in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.
Since that initial introduction, fans have speculated about the fluidity of Lando’s sexuality, and his openly flirtatious nature with Han in the new Solo film has been picked up on by many film critics who have already seen the movie.
Not only that, he’s seemingly attracted to women, and even a droid in the new instalment.
When asked if Lando would identify as pansexual, one of Solo’s writers, Jonathan Kasdan, told The Huffington Post: “I would say yes.”
He added: “There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie.
“I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.
“He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun. I don’t know where it will go.”
Last year, new novel Leia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray heavily implied that Amilyn Holdo is bisexual.
The character was played by Laura Dern in The Last Jedi, and although the film didn’t acknowledge her sexuality, she was the first openly LGBTQ character seen onscreen in a Star Wars blockbuster.
Solo: A Star Wars Story will be in cinemas from 24 May.
