Katy Perry has admitted that she’d rewrite one of her biggest hits if she had the chance.
It’s been a long, long decade since Katy Perry released her iconic single I Kissed A Girl (yes, we feel old too) and despite being lauded as a bi-curious anthem at the time, it’s fair to say the track hasn’t aged particularly well.
With lyrics that claim kissing members of the same sex is “not what good girls do” and “not how they should behave”, it’s not surprising that some have questioned the lyrical content of the number one smash hit.
And it seems the pop superstar herself is fully aware of this.
“That [song] came out in 2008, and I think we’ve really changed, conversationally, in the past 10 years,” she told Glamour. “We’ve come a long way. Bisexuality wasn’t as talked about back then, or any type of fluidity.
“If I had to write that song again, I probably would make an edit on it. Lyrically, it has a couple of stereotypes in it.”
She added: “Your mind changes so much in 10 years, and you grow so much. What’s true for you can evolve.”
Katy’s comments came about in Glamour’s latest video, in which the singer watches fan covers of her music and reacts to them – clearly, listening back to the lyrics of her song reminded her that it wasn’t quite as celebratory as she first thought.
Now if she could just address her homophobic, femme-shaming, heteronormative-aspiring track Ur So Gay, we’d definitely be ready to forgive.
