Lena Waithe has weighed in on who she’d like to host the Oscars after the Kevin Hart fiasco.
Kevin Hart was initially going to be hosting the Oscars, however he stepped down from the role after past homophobic tweets resurfaced.
“Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay’,” he wrote in one tweet, which has since been deleted.
Comments made during his Seriously Funny show in 2010 also received attention, where he told the audience: “One of my biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay. That’s a fear.”
Hart later issued an apology to the LGBTQ community: “I will say this, and I want to make this very clear,” he said. “Once again, Kevin Hart apologises for his remarks that hurt members of the LGBTQ community. I apologise.
“These weren’t words that I said to gay individuals. I didn’t say these words to people, at the time, this was our dumb asses on Twitter going back and forth with each other.
“We thought it was okay to talk like that, because that’s how we talked to one another. In that, you go, ‘Fuck! This is wrong now.’”
Reflecting on Hart’s comments, and the ensuing controversy, Lena Waithe told Variety: “We gotta make sure that the gay community is no longer the butt of the joke.
“I think we gotta make this a teachable moment.
“I don’t think [Hart] understood the ramifications of what he said. We should stand firm in what we did and try to challenge everybody else not to do that kind of thing anymore.”
And when asked who she’s like to see host the ceremony, Waithe had one idea. “‘I like the idea of a really gay ass black person hosting,” she said. “Wanda [Sykes] would be amazing.”
Waithe also called for more shows like Pose, the groundbreaking series which prominently features trans actors in trans roles. Speaking to GLAAD, she said: “There’s a lot of kids that watch that show and it’s changing lives, so let’s continue to do that.”
