Lin-Manuel Miranda slammed The Door Church over their unauthorised and homophobic version of Hamilton.
At the start of August, the South Texas-based church went viral on social media after they hosted a performance of the famous historical musical.
However unlike the source material, the church’s heavily edited show included references to Jesus and Christianity.
The conservative performance then concluded with an anti-LGBTQ+ sermon by The Door pastor Victor Lopez – which featured him comparing homosexuality to drug addiction.
“Maybe you struggle with alcohol, with drugs, homosexuality. Maybe you struggle with other things in life, your finances, whatever, relationships — God can help you tonight,” Lopez said.
On 10 August, Miranda finally broke his silence by taking to Twitter and condemning The Door Church for their illegal performance of the hit show.
“Grateful to all of you who reached out about this illegal, unauthorized production. Now lawyers do their work,” the In The Heights star tweeted.

And always grateful to the @dramatistsguild, who have the backs of writers everywhere, be it your first play or your fiftieth. 1/2 https://t.co/yMtM3z9crI— Lin-Manuel Miranda (@Lin_Manuel) August 10, 2022
“And always grateful to the [Dramatists Guild] who have the backs of writers everywhere, be it your first play or your fiftieth.”
The Tony winner’s tweet included the Dramatist Guild’s statement, which also condemned The Door Church for their unauthorised use of the musical.
Miranda wasn’t the only person from the Hamilton team to slam the Texas church.
On 9 August, Hamilton spokesperson Shane Marshall Brown revealed that the show “does not grant amateur or professional licenses for any stage productions” in a statement to CNN.
Another spokesperson for Hamilton also said: “The Hamilton family stands for tolerance, compassion, inclusivity and certainly LGBTQ+ rights. We are in the process of reviewing the unauthorised changes made to the script to determine further action.”
Since its release in 2015, Hamilton has received universal acclaim from critics and musical enthusiasts.
Alongside its unforgettable songs like Satisfied and My Shot, the show has also been lauded for its diverse and inclusive cast.
