We haven’t seen the last of Tess and Anna Coleman!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan will reprise their respective Freaky Friday roles for a forthcoming sequel from Disney.
Elyse Hollander, who’s best known for her Black List screenplays Blonde Ambition (2016) and Queens of the Stoned Age (2018), will reportedly write the script.
The 2003 fantasy comedy – home to one of the 00’s most defining pop-rock anthems (Ultimate) – follows widowed therapist Tess and her aspiring teenage musician daughter Anna whose bodies are switched by a magical Chinese fortune cookie.
Based on Mary Rodgers’s 1972 novel of the same name, Freaky Friday was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing over $160 million at the worldwide box office on a $26 million budget.
The supporting cast includes Ryan Malgarini, Harold Gould, Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Stephen Tobolowsky, Julie Gonzalo, Willie Garson, Christina Vidal and Haley Hudson.
Curtis and Lohan reflected on the success of the film last year, with the former stating: “Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.'”
Lohan added: “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”
In a later interview with Variety, Curtis said a sequel is “going to happen”.
“Without saying there’s anything officially happening,” she continued, “I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, ‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”
In recent years, Lohan has enjoyed a career resurgence with a leading role in Netflix’s 2022 romantic comedy Falling for Christmas, and is set to star in the streamer’s upcoming fantasy rom-com Irish Wish.
Curtis recently won her first Academy Award for her supporting performance in the Daniels’ lauded sci-fi epic Everything Everywhere All At Once, which made history as the most-awarded film of all time.
She memorably reprised her career-defining role as Laurie Strode in David Gordon Green’s new trilogy of Halloween films between 2018 and 2022. While critical reception varied with each film, the trilogy grossed almost $500 million at the box office.
