The Matrix Resurrections star Jonathan Groff has opened up about the heartfelt moment he shared with his brother after coming out.

Since getting his big break in the popular rock musical Spring Awakening, the beloved talent has captivated viewers in an array of movies and TV series – like Glee, Frozen and Looking.

While Groff has made a name for himself as a talented actor and singer, he has also support from LGBTQIA+ fans for remaining an open book about his gay identity.

Back in 2022, the Mindhunter star revealed to Out that his coming-out journey was full of ups and downs.

“It wasn’t like I came out when I was 23, and everything was great,” he explained to the publication. “I came out of the closet, and I was still feeling quite shameful for many years.”

He added that he struggled with his identity for six years – even after coming out – until he landed the lead role in the LGBTQITA+ series Looking.

“It was really that experience that really turned the corner for me,” he said.

Now, in a new interview with Condé Nast Traveler, Groff has given further insight into his coming out journey and the heartwarming way he came out to his brother David.

“I went to Italy when I was 23. It was the first time I had left the country or travelled by myself,” he recalled.

“Over a week, I visited Assisi, Siena, and Florence before meeting my brother in Rome. On my last day alone, I went to see the [statue of] David at the Academia Gallery.”

Groff went on to say that the aforementioned work of art made him cry, which resulted in him questioning his “emotional” response to the naked figure.

After gathering his thoughts by journaling in a local piazza, he decided that it was time to come out to his brother.

“Only my roommate knew I was gay, because he was also my secret boyfriend. I took the train to Rome, and David and I spent the day as tourists,” he continued.

“In the evening, we went to this restaurant called Saby’s near our hotel… we were getting pasta, we were getting wine, and I knew that if I didn’t tell him right then, I would never do it.”

However, before he could back out, David started the conversation by opening up about his own romantic life and the girl he was in love with.

“He teed it up perfectly, and once he gave me all the details, he said, ‘This is the first time I’ve ever felt this, and I’m wondering, what about you?’ And I shared everything with him,” he added.

Groff’s heartwarming story comes a few months before his appearance in the upcoming season of Doctor Who, which will see Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor.

According to the BBC, The Normal Heart star is set to play “a key role” in the new batch of episodes.
