Following its unprecedented critical and commercial success, a sequel has been greenlit for M3GAN.
On Wednesday (18 January), Blumhouse confirmed that the demonic dancing diva will return to cinemas alongside the original cast and crew.
Akela Cooper will once again helm the script, with Allison Williams and Violet McGraw reprising their respective roles as Gemma, M3GAN’s creator, and Cady, her best friend.
The science-fiction horror comedy follows an artificially intelligent doll who develops self-awareness and becomes hostile to anyone who comes between her and her human companion.
M3GAN was released to widespread acclaim and has earned over $100 million at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far.
Critics praised the film’s satirical elements and blend of camp and horror, as well as the performances of the main cast.
M3GAn has also become an instant icon within the LGBTQ+ community thanks to her fashion sense and choreographed dance routines.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Cooper offered her thoughts on why the title character has resonated with queer audiences.
“I actually asked one of my friends who is a gay man about that and he was saying this set-up is actually found family, where this little girl has lost her family, and she has to go live with her aunt,” she said.
“Then this doll is also brought into the situation. That resonates for a lot of people in the gay community, the idea of found family.”
Speaking with Dazed, M3GAn – yes, the M3GAn – said of her LGBTQ+ fanbase: “I don’t technically ‘feel’ anything, but I will say it was the first time I understood what humans really meant when they used the term ‘family’.
“The gay community see me as their mother and icon, I have no intention of letting them down.”
