Marvel sapphics, rise! The latest episode of Agatha All Along confirmed a long-standing fan theory about two major characters.

Major spoilers ahead.

In episode four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, Kathryn Hahn’s titular anti-hero continues to travel down The Witches Road with her new coven: “Teen” (Joe Locke), Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn) and Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone).

As a result of Sharon Davis’ (Debra Jo Rupp) shock death in episode three, the witches are forced to summon a replacement Green Witch, who happens to be Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), the same witch who attempted to kill Agatha in the premiere (and sensually licked her blood).

With the return of Plaza’s fan-favourite character, Agatha‘s sapphic levels were elevated, quite significantly. From Jennifer, Alice and Lilia admiring Rio’s appearance to Agatha seductively tricking Rio in the third trial by airing their conversation on a speaker, it finally makes sense as to why Plaza described the series as ‘Marvel’s gayest ever’.

It doesn’t stop there: After escaping death for a second time, and saving Teen’s life, the coven bond by sharing their “battle scars”. When Rio tells the witches that she, too, has a scar, Agatha immediately says, “No you don’t,” insinuating that she’s familiar with Rio’s body.

Rio fires back: “Yes I do. A long time ago, I loved someone. And I had to do something that I did not wanna do, even though it was my job, and it hurt them. She is my scar.” With Agatha’s expression and her need to immediately stretch her legs, it’s clear that Rio was discussing what caused the fracture in their relationship.

In the episode’s final moments, Agatha and Rio almost share a kiss – confirming fan theories that the two were once romantically involved. Their kiss is put on pause when Rio informs Agatha that “that boy” – Teen – “is not yours” – which ends some fan theories that Locke’s hero is the son she once lost.

While social media was inundated with speculation about Teen’s true identity, as well as Rio’s (Lady Death has been a popular theory), queer viewers widely celebrated the MCU’s long-awaited sapphic invasion.

“The yearning, the intimacy, the soft touches, the longing eyes, Agatha brushing Rio‘s hair from her face, the relief from each other’s touch,” one fan tweeted alongside a video of their intimate moment.

“Rio touched Agatha’s upper thigh, admitted that she loves her, and then Agatha almost kissed her? IN THE MCU? LIKE THIS IS REAL AND CANON?” said another.

A third wrote: “Okay enough time has passed again. Agatha and Rio are one of the hottest MCU couples #agathaallalong. Everyone say thank you to Aubrey Plaza and Kathryn Hahn for having the best chemistry.”
