GAY TIMES has the first exclusive look at the red band trailer for Sky’s Originals’ Mary & George, and it is deliciously steamy.
The trailer is aptly assigned an 18+ certification because within the first ten seconds, Mary Villiers, played by Academy Award winner Julianne Moore, is captured mid-inhalation in a moment of queer passion.
The palpable lust continues throughout the trailer with Red, White & Royal Blue star Nicholas Galitzine captured in a string of risqué interactions with different men, in an attempt to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England (Tony Curran).
It is unsurprising the trailer is like this considering Oliver Hermanus, director, told GAY TIMES: “I’ve never had to choreograph as many sex scenes in my career!”
Hermanus shared that “queer” is the correct way to describe the freeing sexual fluidity in the show “because the nature of the show is that everything and everyone is ambiguous. Intentions are ambiguous. Sexuality, desire… Just when you think you know somebody’s box, they break that box. I think that’s the fun of it.”
This is something that is “very unusual” in “historical fiction” according to Moore.
The official synopsis reads: “Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors.
“And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher.
“Prepared to stop at nothing and armed with her ruthless political steel, Mary married her way up the ranks, bribed politicians, colluded with criminals and clawed her way into the heart of the Establishment, making it her own.”
Mary & George is described as an “audacious historical psychodrama about a treacherous mother and son who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the Court of England and the bed of its King”.
The series boasts an ensemble cast, with supporting players such as: Nichola Walker (The Split), Niamh Algar (The Wonder), Trine Dyrholm (The Legacy), Sean Gilder (Slow Horses), Adrian Rawlins (Chernobyl), Mark O’Halloran (The Miracle Club), Laurie Davidson (Guilty Party), Samuel Blenkin (Atlanta) and Jacob McCarthy (SAS: Rogue Heroes).
More star power incoming: Tom Victor (Consent), Alice Grant (Anthem at Almeida Theatre), Amelia Gething (Emily), Mirren Mack (The Nest), Rina Mahoney (Happy Valley) and Simon Russell Beale (The Death of Stalin).
Written by acclaimed playwright DC Moore (Killing Eve), Mary & George is based on the non-fiction book The King’s Assassin by Benjamin Woolley. Oliver Hermanus (Living) serves as lead director alongside second and third block directors Alex Winckler (Somewhere Boy) and Florian Cossen (The Empress).
Mary & George is now available to stream in full in the UK on Sky Atlantic.
