Melanie Lynskey has opened up about her “heartbreaking” friendship breakup with Kate Winslet.
Before earning acclaim for her roles in Showtime’s Yellowjackets and HBO’s The Last of Us, the Ever After star earned her big break in Peter Jackson’s drama Heavenly Creatures.
The Oscar-nominated film, which was based on the 1954 Parker-Hulme murder case, follows the story of Pauline (Lynskey) and Juliet (Winslet), two teenage girls who strike an intense friendship – which leads to the murder of the latter’s mother.
Like their two characters, Winslet and Lynskey formed a close bond while filming the project. However, as their individual stars began to rise within Hollywood, the two beloved talents lost touch.
In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lynskey gave further insight into how growing apart from the Titanic star affected her.
“When I lost touch with Kate, it was more heartbreaking than some breakups that I’ve had,” she revealed.
“It was so painful. And it wasn’t like anything happened –– it’s just she became a gigantic, international movie star, and she didn’t have a lot of time.”
The Red Rose star went on to say that they “gradually” drifted apart before describing it as a “painful” experience to navigate.
While the pair are no longer close friends, Lynskey told Horowitz that there was no bad blood between the stars. She even admitted to getting angry at critics who body-shamed Winslet in the 90s.
“This is an actor who comes along once in a generation. Just focus on that. It infuriated me so much, and I was just always amazed by how gracefully she handled all of that. It was always really impressive,” she explained.
This isn’t the first time that the Two and a Half Men star has opened up about her former friendship with Winslet.
Back in 2012, the New Zealand actress described her relationship with the Avatar: Way of Water star as “very intense.”
“It was more intense than some love affairs that I have had in my life. We developed such a bond that for a long time, we couldn’t let it go,” she explained to Time.
“We would write each other letters and talk on the phone all the time. We were in constant contact for so long.”
Here’s to hoping the two superstars will reunite in the future.
