Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez will be joined by Meryl Streep in the third season of Only Murders in the Building.

The three-time Oscar winner’s involvement was confirmed on Tuesday (17 January) with a video posted to Gomez’s Instagram profile.

Streep, who holds the record for most Oscar nominations with 21, last appeared on-screen in Netflix’s political satire Don’t Look Up (2021), which became the streamer’s second most-watched film of all time.

It hasn’t been confirmed whether Streep has joined the cast in a regular or recurring role.

Only Murders in the Building follows Charles-Haden Savage (Martin), Oliver Putnam (Short) and Mabel Mora (Gomez), mismatched neighbours who bond over their love of true crime podcasts.

When residents in their building are mysteriously murdered, the trio start their own podcast whilst uncovering the truth behind the killings.

Season two culminated with the death of actor Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), who died onstage while performing in a play opposite Charles. Season three will pick up as Charles, Oliver and Mabel try to bring his killer to justice.

Only Murders in the Building has received universal critical acclaim for the show’s homage and comedic approach to crime fiction, the cast’s performances and the chemistry between the three leads.

The series also received praise for its depiction of queerness with Gomez’s character, who embarked on a relationship with Cara Delevingne’s Alice Banks, a pretentious artist and gallerist, in season two.

Season three is expected to premiere later this year.

Only Murders in the Building is available to stream on Disney+ in the UK.
