“Wrong decision Netflix, wrong decision.”
Social media has been in uproar over the past 24 hours due to Netflix’s decision to cancel One Day at a Time.
Ever since the comedy series premiered on the streaming platform back in 2017, it has received universal acclaim from critics the performances of its cast and its writing.
The show has become known for tackling issues such as homophobia, racism and depression.
Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, said in a statement: “It’s been a great honor to work with the legendary Norman Lear on One Day at a Time.
“I’ve personally spoken with Norman and co-creators Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce to express my gratitude to them, all the writers, the dedicated crew and the cast, including the brilliant Justina Machado and dazzling Rita Moreno, for creating a series with such humor, heart and humanity.
“This was a very difficult decision, and we’re thankful to all the fans who’ve supported the series, our partners at Sony and all the critics who embraced it. While it’s disappointing that more viewers didn’t discover One Day at a Time, I believe the series will stand the test of time.”
Shortly after it was announced, lead actress Justina Machado tweeted her appreciation to the show’s fanbase.
“I don’t even know how to begin to express my gratitude to everyone,” she wrote. “Truly, I am so honored that we got to tell our stories. Yes it was a Latinx family but it was a universal story about family and love. An American Familia.”
Netflix’s decision to cancel the critically-acclaimed series has been met with unanimous backlash from fans on social media, who paid tribute to the show with several “beautiful” scenes that showcased its characters discussing sensitive topics.
They also rejected the show’s cancellation with the hashtag “SaveODAAT.” See below.

Fuck you Netflix, first you take Sense8 and now you have the audacity to take One Day At A Time too? Maybe cancel some of your toxic trash shows like 13 Reasons Why before getting rid of amazing and diverse shows! 😡 #saveODAAT

One of the most beautiful moments I had on set of One Day At A Time was when I got to guest star. Rita Moreno invited myself and @melissafumero into her dressing room. #SAVEODAAT

I think my favorite episode of one day at a time was Penelope explaining to Elena what anxiety attack was and the show actually simulating what it was, It was so eloquently handled and made me feel like I wasn’t alone! We need a show like this #saveODAAT pic.twitter.com/oNGiaSrw5f
