A new comedy about a gay man with cerebral palsy is coming to Netflix.
The streaming giant have ordered eight episodes of Special, which is loosely based on writer Ryan O’Connell’s critically-acclaimed 2015 part-memoir, part-manifesto I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves.
Special, which is expected to premiere 12 April, tells the story of a gay man with mild cerebral palsy who decides to rewrite his identity as an accident victim and finally go after the life he wants.

O’Connell, who has previously worked on shows including Awkward and the recently revived Will & Grace, will write, executive produce and star in the series. Talk about a triple threat.

He’ll be starring alongside Jessica Hecht (Breaking Bad), Punam Patel (Adam Ruins Everything), Marla Mindelle (The Devil’s Bitch), Augustus Prew (Prison Break) and Patrick Fabian (Better Call Saul).
The project comes from Jim Parsons’ That’s Wonderful Productions and Warner Bros’ Digital Networks’ Stage 13.
Parsons, who recently walked away from his role on The Big Bang Theory, is also working on a new multi-camera NBC sitcom.
The Inn Crowd will centre on a gay couple and their resort in a rural town, and how its success divides the residents. It is based on Tony Horwitz’s 1999 New Yorker article.
Special is set to premiere on Netflix on 12 April.
