Olivia Colman showcased her support for her Hearstopper co-star Kit Connor after he was forced to out himself as bisexual.
Back in October, the young talent made headlines when he confirmed his sexuality on Twitter following months of harassment from “fans.”
“Back for a minute. I’m bi. Congrats for forcing an 18-year-old to out himself,” he wrote. “I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”
Before his forced admission, social media users accused the Rocketman actor of “queerbaiting” after they began to speculate about his connection with his A Cuban Girls Guide to Tea and Tomorrow co-star Maia Reficco – who’s also openly queer.
Since coming out, Connor has received an array of supportive messages from fans, industry professionals and his Heartstopper co-stars, like Colman.
In a recent interview with Variety, The Crown star praised the beloved actor for his brave tweet before slamming the “bullies” who pressured him.
“I am so proud of him, but I am not proud of how people bullied him. I think people should be allowed to have their own journey,” she told the publication.
“But I’m incredibly proud of him as a young man to deal with all of that and be in the spotlight. It’s unfair. But he’s amazing. He’s a very beautiful human being.”
Colman’s isn’t the only industry heavyweight to show support for Connor.
In a recent interview with Vulture, Pushing Daisies star Lee Pace said people’s focus should only be on the 18-year-old’s acting talent, not his sexuality.
“I actually don’t care about anything else. It’s none of my business anyway. I’d rather take your word for it than some kind of hot take on it, you know,” he told the publication.
“He’ll choose to reveal himself in the work he does, in the way he interprets characters, in the way he chooses the characters he wants to play.
“It’s absurd. I look at him, and he’s so great in the show, and all I think is, I want to see what else you do. I want to see all the people you inhabit in your career.”
Colman’s interview came a day before Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman announced that season two of the series was officially wrapped.
“It’s been an incredibly intense few months on set with many new challenges for the cast and crew, but everyone rose to those challenges with such passion and skill and determination,” Oseman wrote on Instagram.
“Huge thanks to every single member of the cast and crew – everyone has worked ridiculously hard and given it their all, and for that, I am eternally grateful. This season is going to be so magical and I can’t wait to get started on post-production!”
As of this writing, Netflix has yet to reveal an official release date for the new batch of episodes.
