A potential same-sex Star Wars romance has been given the thumbs up by Oscar Isaac.
The actor, who plays Poe Dameron in the sci-fi movie series, has previously spoken positively about the prospect of a fan-demanded relationship between his character and stormtrooper Finn, portrayed by John Boyega.
“That isn’t necessarily going to be a clear story point, but as an actor, I’m very open to those storylines,” he said in December, acknowledging that if his character were gay or bisexual it would help people “see themselves” represented on screen.
When one fan, Madeline, saw that Oscar would be appearing on TV show Live With Kelly And Ryan near where she lives, she decided to try her luck at meeting him and turned up outside the studio without a ticket.
“There were two others outside waiting who said they saw him go in but security was being really strict and so I was a bit discouraged,” she told BuzzFeed.
“But luckily once he knew fans were waiting he came outside with no security and couldn’t have been nicer.”
That’s when she seized her chance to show him a sign she’d made, which read “FinnPoe is endgame” – a reference to the ‘ship’ between Finn and Poe that fans draw art and write fiction based on.

She asked him to sign it as an endorsement, to which he laughed and said “fully endorsed” as he left his signature and added the words “fully endorsed” underlined.
“To me, that’s the best part,” Madeline explained. “He didn’t need to write that; he just recognises what the pairing means to people.”

Speaking of her love for Star Wars, she continued: “My father introduced it to me when I was little because he’s a fanatic as well.
“When The Force Awakens came out, I fell in love with the new characters and adopted FinnPoe as one of my favourite ships. I’d love to see them become canon because it’s just so natural.
“Finn flirts with Rey in the first movie quite a bit. I’m bisexual, and it would mean a great deal to me to see a bisexual character portrayed on screen.”
John Boyega – who plays Finn in the movies – has also spoken about the possibility of a same-sex romance between the two characters, as well as giving his reason as to why he thinks fans picked up on the chemistry between them.
“I think that Oscar is always looking at me with love in his eyes, and I guess that the fans saw it,” he said. “And then they realised that either he needs to chill or come out.”
And it’s not just the actors adding fuel to the fire, as the head of LucasFilms, Kathleen Kennedy, revealed last year that the potential romance has been “talked about” by the studio.
“After 40 years of adventures, people have a lot of information and a lot of theories about the path these stories can take, and sometimes those theories that come up are new ideas for us to listen to, read and pay attention to,” she said.
