Oscars 2023: Everything Everywhere All At Once, Lady Gaga and Tár nominated

Everything Everywhere All At Once is the film to beat at this year’s 95th Academy Awards.

The Daniels’ queer sci-fi epic, which follows a Chinese immigrant (Michelle Yeoh) as she connects with parallel universe versions of herself to save the multiverse, received the most nominations with 11. The power of the bagel!

Nominations include Best Picture and Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert), as well as acting nods for Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis and Yeoh. All four actors are first-time nominees; the latter also makes history as the first Malaysian person to be nominated for an Oscar.

After winning a Golden Globe for her performance as a lesbian musical conductor in Tár, Cate Blanchett has received her eighth Oscar nomination and fifth for Best Actress. Blanchett previously won for The Aviator (2004) and Blue Jasmine (2013).

Tár earned a further five nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (Todd Field).

Close, Lukas Dhont’s compelling examination on masculinity, sexuality and grief, earned a single nomination for Best International Feature Film.

Based on Dhont’s experiences at school, Close tells the story of the passionate friendship between two 13-year-old boys who begin to question their identities and relationship with masculinity when their peers “accuse” them of being romantically involved.

Little Monsters also united with Lady Gaga’s fourth Oscar nomination.

Hold My Hand, from Top Gun: Maverick, is currently up for Best Original Song, where it faces competition from Rihanna’s Lift Me Up (Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever), Diane Warren’s Applause (Tell It Like a Woman), Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava’s Naatu Naatu (RRR) and Ryan Lott and David Byrne’s This Is a Life (Everything Everywhere All At Once).

Gaga won in 2018 for Shallow (A Star Is Born).

Finally, Angela Bassett makes history as the first actor to be nominated for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. For her lauded performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever, Bassett is up for Best Supporting Actress.
