In celebration of Pride month later this year, Paris Is Burning will return to cinemas.
The legendary 1990 documentary chronicled the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved. It explored race, class, gender, and sexuality in 1980’s America, and is widely credited with bringing mainstream attention to voguing and the ballroom scene.
Dorian Corey, Pepper LaBeija, Venus Xtravaganza, Octavia St. Laurent, Angie Xtravaganza, Sol Pendavis, Freddie Pendavis, Junior Labeija, Paris Dupree and Willi Ninja (the ‘godfather of voguing’) were among the performers involved.
The film was directed by American director Jennie Livingston, who served as a producer on the first season of Ryan Murphy’s drama Pose, which borrows many elements from the iconic documentary.
She is also set to direct an episode of the highly-anticipated second season, which is set to air 9 June, at 9pm ET/PT on FX.
Paris Is Burning will make its cinematic comeback in New York City on 14 June, and will reportedly be remastered in HD. In the UK, the film is available to stream on Netflix. Watch the sickening trailer below.
