Lord Ivar Mountbatten has opened up about his marriage.

A year ago, Queen Elizabeth’s cousin made history when he married his partner James Coyle, becoming the first member of the extended British Royal Family to enter into a same-sex marriage.

Asked whether his decision to come out as gay was good for the royals, he told Tatler magazine: “Well, you would hope so!”

He then added: “But then they don’t really talk about it. I mean, the royals, they don’t communicate very well.”

Mountbatten separated from his ex-wife Penny in 2011 after struggling with his sexuality, although he says that both she and their children are entirely supportive of his new marriage.

“I think they like having another man in the house,” he said of his children’s relationship with partner Coyle. “Better than a stepmother who could have turned out to be a step-monster.”

Coyle, who expressed sadness at the thought of never having kids, added: “This is the icing on the cake. I’ve got a husband and a ready-made family.”

Mountbatten and his husband met by chance at a Swiss skiing resort in March of 2015, when Coyle mistook him for a guide he once knew. He shouted “Hello” to Mountbatten across the bar and that chance encounter lead to them dating.

They married at Mountbatten’s country estate in Devon in front of a small group of family and friends. Mountbatten’s ex-wife Penny, who he was married to for seventeen years, gave him away.
