For the first time ever in the UK, a museum will open that will solely focus on LGBTQ history.
Queer Britain: The National LGBTQ+ Museum will play host to a series of permanent and temporary exhibits, positioning itself as an essential resource for the community to preserve and celebrate the memory of LGBTQ figures, stories and issues that have come before us.
Queer Britain will also have a handful of multifaceted spaces that can be used by the LGBTQ community.
“People came out of their closets, now it’s time to come out of the margins. Queer Britain will be the first national museum for all, regardless of sexuality and gender identity,” said Co-Founder & CEO, Joseph Galliano.
“It will fully celebrate and reflect the lives of LGBTQ+ people of all backgrounds. It will help complete the nation’s family tree.”
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, added: “As Mayor, it’s so important to me that London is seen as a city where LGBTQ+ people feel valued, happy and safe – this sends a clear message to the world that London is a beacon of diversity.
“I look forward to the opening of the new museum and the role it will play in shining a light on LGBTQ+ history.”
Plans for Queer Britain: The National LGBTQ+ Museum were announced at an intimate reception at the Oscar Wilde Bar in Hotel Café Royal – a venue entrenched in queer history.
The museum will now collect stories from the LGBTQ community across the nation from many different backgrounds to make sure their stories are preserved and celebrated for future generations.
Queer Britain: The National LGBTQ+ Museum is currently anticipated to open in 2021.
