A recent poll discovered that American audiences are not ready for a gay James Bond.
The Hollywood Reporter conducted a study about the future of the franchise, and found that 52% of American audiences strongly oppose a gay James Bond, whereas 28% supported the idea. 20% were unsure.
48% also opposed a female Bond, 29% were against a black Bond, and 26 people were not on board with an American Bond.
Back in 2012, the most recent Bond actor Daniel Craig said he couldn’t imagine the character ever being gay.
In an interview with E!, the British star was questioned on the concept, and said: “No. Because he’s not gay.”
However, Pierce Brosnan – who played Bond from 1995-2002 – was more receptive of the idea, telling Details: “Sure. Why not? Actually, I don’t know how it would work.
“I don’t think Barbara [Broccoli, James Bond producer] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing.
“Let’s start with a great black actor being James Bond. Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet.”
Even though a recent report from GLAAD found that the amount of queer characters on our screens has increased by over 100 to a new record, it appears as though we’re a long way off from a gay James Bond.
