From Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine’s chemistry to Uma Thurman as the goddamn president, the first trailer for Red, White & Royal Blue is everything we wanted and more.
Based on Casey McQuiston’s iconic New York Bestseller of the same name, the Prime Video rom-com stars Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz and Galitzine as Prince Henry.
In similar vein to the book, the film follows the story of Alex, the son of America’s first female president (played by the Kill Bill icon), and his complicated relationship with his royal counterpart across the pond.
“Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder, driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time,” reads the synopsis.
“Going into damage-control mode, their families and handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.”
To the beat of Lil Nas X’s 2021 smasher That’s What I Want, the trailer sees Alex and Henry cause an international, cake-related incident.
After Thurman’s president forces her son to do some “good ol’ fashioned damage control”, Alex and Henry try and “convince the world” of their friendship, while falling in love in the process (and keeping it secret because, well, homophobia!).
Red, White And Royal Blue’s cast also includes Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Stephen Fry, Ellie Bamber, Thomas Flynn, Malcolm Atobrah, Akshay Khanna, Sharon D Clarke, Aneesh Sheth, and Juan Castano.
Earlier this year, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) revealed that the film would be Rated-R due to “language, some sexual content, and partial nudity.”
As the two central characters – in the words of one Twitter user – “fuck every time they see each other in the book”, fans celebrated the news on social media.
In a recent interview with GQ, Zakhar Perez and Galitzine discussed bringing the book’s steamy and romantic sex scenes to life.
“There’s so much choreography to sex…ual scenes. Our guards were down during the rehearsals, but one of us would say something stupid like, ‘Get off me!’ as soon as someone yelled ‘Cut,’” said Zakhar Perez.
Galitzine echoed similar sentiments, stating: “It’s crazy to be intimate like that with your friend. And we want people to fall in love with these characters, because their love has to be real.”
Red, White & Royal Blue premieres 11 August on Prime Video – watch the first trailer here or below.
