Ruby Rose’s casting as Batwoman was announced back in August.
In August it was announced that gender-fluid and gay actress Ruby Rose, who shot to worldwide fame after appearing as Stella on prison drama Orange Is The New Black, would be playing Batwoman in the upcoming CW series. Her casting also meant that a queer character was being played by a queer actress, which is unfortunately still a rare occurrence in Hollywood.
Unfortunately, the actress was forced to delete her Twitter account after she was targeted by trolls who criticised her “poor” acting skills, and the fact that she’s not identified as a lesbian, despite having been been out of the closet since she was 12.
Before leaving Twitter, Rose tweeted: “Ok tied up some loose ends, read a tweet from my idol, and am deleting Twitter now to focus on my next two projects, so I won’t be on here for a while… but can I clear up one last thing that has had me laughing but also baffled?
“Where on earth ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be Batwoman’ come from – has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.”
And in a new interview with Australia’s TV Week magazine, she spoke about her feelings about getting the role, and how she views it as a win for the whole LGBTQ community.
“It fulfils my life mantra of, ‘Be the person you needed when you were young,'” she said. “I can’t speak on behalf of everyone in the LGBTIQ community, but I know any win for anyone in our community is a win for all.”
Rose’s first appearance as Batwoman will be in tonight’s episode of Elseworlds, where she has a small role. Her dedicated series, Batwoman, will debut next year.
