Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega have continued to prove that 2024 is the year for the sapphics.

Following Chappell Roan’s chart domination and Billie Eilish’s flanter with Charli XCX on ‘Guess’, the duo have sent queer females spiralling with their unexpected intimacy in Sabrina’s music video for ‘Taste’.

The Dave Meyers-directed visual for the infectious pop-rock anthem follows the ‘Espresso’ singer and Scream star as they shoot, stab and torture one another for the affection of a man.

Towards the end of the video, Jenna’s character plants a kiss on her boyfriend, only for him to be revealed as Sabrina. It concludes with the duo accidentally murdering the boyfriend, attending his funeral and sharing a cheeky smile at the pandemonium they’ve caused. Very gay!

Inspired by Death Becomes Her, it features direct references to Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) and Helen Sharp’s (Goldie Hawn) iconic rivalry, with Sabrina and Jenna respectively sporting a hole in the chest and a bent neck. It’s the music video of the year, basically.

The video’s sapphic romance hasn’t come out of nowhere, either, with the following lyrics giving – in the words of one fan – “queer energy”: “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true, you’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you.”

As expected, the video was a major hit with LGBTQIA+ fans, with one writing on X/Twitter: “I was NOT expecting to get sapphic enemies to lovers on a random friday but thank you anyway pop princess Sabrina Carpenter.”

“Do i see everything in a sapphic lens or did Sabrina’s mv ending hinted at them getting together after killing the boyfriend,” another wrote.

A third said: “Sometimes, I tell myself I’m lying about being queer but then Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega will release a music video filled with horror movie references where they look hot covered in blood, kiss, and laugh about the man being dead at the end.”

‘Taste’ is the third single from Sabrina’s sixth studio album, Short ‘n’ Sweet, following ‘Espresso’ and ‘Please Please Please’, both of which topped the charts in the UK.
