Sarah Michelle Gellar won’t reprise her role as Kathryn Merteuil in the forthcoming Cruel Intentions show.
Earlier this month, it was announced that Prime Video has greenlit an eight-part series for their streaming service Freevee.
The 1999 cult drama starred Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as two wicked step-siblings who plan to steal the innocence of their headmaster’s daughter, played by Reese Witherspoon.
Additional cast members include Selma Blair, Louise Fletcher, Joshua Jackson, Eric Mabius, Sean Patrick Thomas and Christine Baranski.
Although the Buffy the Vampire Slayer legend previously returned to the aforementioned role for a pilot from NBC, which wasn’t picked up, she recently told Variety that she won’t be involved in the series.
“No. I’ve learned a lesson with that, which is it’s a very difficult process. And eventually, or inevitably, you’re going to be let down,” she explained.
“Because some people want a new [version], some people want this, and my place in something like that only makes you compare it to the original. And if there’s a new take and new whatever, then they get a chance to stand on their own.”
Although Cruel Intentions received mixed reviews at the time, the three leads received widespread critical acclaim for their performances and the film has become a staple in popular culture.
Gellar and Blair’s iconic kiss was historic at the time due to the lack of representation for same-sex intimacy in popular culture – Demi Lovato even admitted that it helped her discover her sexual identity.
Following a brief hiatus from the film and TV industry, Gellar made her long-awaited comeback last year in Netflix’s acclaimed teen comedy Do Revenge.
She later returned to the fantasy genre in Paramount Plus’ teen drama Wolf Pack, based on Edo Van Belkom’s book series of the same name.
The official synopsis reads: “The show focuses on two teenagers who are caught in a wildfire and are wounded by a supernatural creature.
“In the aftermath, they discover they’re werewolves, and develop an intense bond together.The two team up, and encounter two other teenagers, the adoptive children of a park ranger, who went through a similar strange wildfire sixteen years ago.”
Gellar plays Kristen Ramsey, a mysterious arson investigator who is brought in by authorities to catch the person responsible for the wildfire.
In her interview with Variety, Gellar confirmed that “conversations are happening” for a second season.
Ahead of Wolf Pack’s premiere earlier this year, GAY TIMES asked the star – slash “MOTHER!” – about her status as an icon within the LGBTQ+ community.
“I consider myself part of that community,” she said.
“I think that’s what is hard for me right now, everyone gets boxed into these things and I’ve always known that, yes, I’m not… If you had to put down the qualifications to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I don’t qualify!
“But, I am a member, and that’s the whole point though, you do show up. I hope that it feels like I show up in exchange and that’s the whole point. I love it, it’s great. My people!”
