Sarah Paulson is in the dark about her future on American Horror Story.
It was recently announced that FX’s hit horror anthology series will be returning for a ninth season later this year called 1984, but aside from the name and a terrifying 1980s slasher-themed teaser, we don’t know much else about it.
And as it turns out, neither does series regular Sarah Paulson.
“I don’t really know the answer to that,” she said when asked by Syfy if she’ll be returning for the new season. If she doesn’t, it’ll be the first time in the show’s almost decade-long history that she’ll be absent.
“I think… all I can say is I know the least about this season upcoming that I’ve known about any season. I don’t even know… yeah, that’s all I can say. I think that’s all I can say.”
Sarah went on to say that she usually knows more by this point, but that she’s keeping busy with another Ryan Murphy-helmed project called Ratched, a Netflix origin series of Nurse Ratched from classic film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
“Usually, I have more information at this point, and I’m bugging Ryan with questions,” she said. “Right now, I don’t have a lot and yeah, I’m so busy with Ratched, it’s hard for me to think about anything beyond that.”
While Sarah’s return is up in the air, one American Horror Story mainstay who definitely won’t be returning is Evan Peters.
Like his co-star, Evan has appeared in every single season of the show to date, portraying various iconic characters including Tate Langdon, Kit Walker, Kyle Spencer, Jimmy Darling, James Patrick March, Kai Anderson and Jeff Pfister.
Despite his status as a fan favourite, Evan’s revealed that he won’t be appearing in the upcoming ninth season – which will air in Autumn this year – marking the first time in the show’s history he won’t be present.
“I’m gonna sit a season out,” was all he had to say when asked by Extra if he’d be returning.
Earlier this year, Evan told GQ he had a desire to take a “sabbatical” to focus on other endeavours he’s passionate about, while last year he opened up about the negative effects starring in American Horror Story has had on his mental health.
“I’m goofy, I’m silly, I like to have fun. I don’t like to yell and scream. I actually hate it. I think it’s disgusting and really awful, and it’s been a challenge for me. Horror Story sort of demanded that of me,” he said.
“It’s been all a massive stretch for me and really difficult to do. It’s hurting my soul and Evan as a person.
“There’s this massive amount of rage that’s been called upon from me, and the emotional stuff that’s been called on me for Pose has been heartbreaking, and I’m sick. I don’t feel good.”
While Evan won’t be appearing in the upcoming season, it was recently confirmed that series veteran Emma Roberts will be returning, and that Olympic athlete Gus Kenworthy will be making his acting debut as her on-screen boyfriend.
