Sarah Paulson has named and shamed an actor who ‘outrageously’ criticised her performance in an off-Broadway play.
The Emmy Award-winning actress recently appeared on an episode of the Smartless podcast, hosted by actors Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) and Will Arnett (Bojack Horseman).
During the interview, Paulson reminisced on her stint in the 2013 off-Broadway production of Talley’s Folly, which chronicles the romance between Matt Friedman (Danny Burstein) and Sally Talley (Paulson).
Talley’s Folly, which first premiered in 1979, was written by the late Lanford Wilson and originally starred Judd Hirsch and Trish Hawkins as Matt and Sally.
“I did do a play once. The last time I was on stage, I did a play called Talley’s Folly at the Roundabout, and the actress – and I’m going to say this, and I’m not going to ask you to cut this out, because I don’t f***ing care – this actress came to the play,” said Paulson. “Her name is Trish Hawkins – Hi, Trish! Hi, Trisha!”
According to Paulson, Trish attended the performance, “looked at me up and down and then she went, ‘Your dress is yellow. Mine was pink.’ And I thought, ‘What?’”
Two days after the encounter, Paulson received an email that was “six pages long of notes and a communication to me about what she had done when she had done the play, what she recommended I do”.
The star, who revealed that her mother invited Hawkins because they were in “some kind of writing group together”, described her feedback as “outrageous, it was really outrageous”.
Although Paulson joked that she could “get sued” for her comments, she insisted that she ‘doesn’t care’ and issued the following statement to Hawkins: “Trish Hawkins, I have not forgotten it, and I hope to see you never.”
Earlier this year, Paulson – Emmy and Golden Globe winner – earned her first-ever Tony nomination for her performance as Antoinette ‘Toni’ Lafayette in Broadway’s Appropriate.
Best known for her collaborations with Ryan Murphy – including American Horror Story, American Crime Story and Ratched – Paulson recently earned acclaim for her guest stints in Hulu’s The Bear and Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
She is set to star in the upcoming psychological horror-thriller Hold Your Breath, premiering on Hulu later this year, alongside Annaleigh Ashford and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
