Netflix has commissioned Sex Education for an eight-episode second season.
The coming-of-age dramedy – which follows a sexually awkward teenager living with his sex therapist mother – garnered over 40 million viewers in its first week of release, becoming one of the streaming service’s most successful shows ever, so its renewal comes as no surprise.
It also received high acclaim from fans and critics for the cast’s performances, for tackling sensitive subjects and its diverse representation of the LGBTQ community, receiving a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Series creator Laurie Nunn said in a statement: “The reception to season one has been so exciting. Seeing how people across the world have connected to characters that began as ideas in my head is incredible.
“I’m hugely grateful to every person that has taken the time to watch the series, and I can’t wait to continue this amazing journey.”
Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, also said: “Laurie Nunn has captured the awkward teenage experience with a lot of heart and humor in Sex Education.
“Along with the Eleven team and executive producer and director Ben Taylor, she’s created a universally relatable series that has resonated with our members around the world.”
Season one cast members Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Sterling, Tanya Reynolds and Patricia Allison are all set to reprise their roles.
