Taylor Swift has made a hefty donation to an LGBTQ advocacy group.
The American singer-songwriter contributed $113,000 to Tennessee Equality Project, an organisation dedicated to fighting for LGBTQ rights in the conservative state.
“Dear Chris, I’m writing you to say that I’m so inspired by the work you do, specifically in organizing the recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders standing up against the ‘Slate of Hate’ in our state legislature,” she wrote.
“Please convey my heartfelt thanks to them and accept this donation to support the work you and those leaders are doing. I’m so grateful that they’re giving all people a place to worship. Sincerely, Taylor Swift.”
The group responded in a Facebook post: “Taylor Swift has been a long-time ally to the LGBTQ community.
“She sees our struggle in Tennessee and continues to add her voice with so many good people, including religious leaders, who are speaking out for love in the face of fear. Tennessee Equality Project is honored and grateful to reveal Taylor Swift has made a donation of $113,000 to support our efforts at this critical moment.”
Taylor has often refrained from voicing her political views throughout her career, but last year, she made her support for the LGBTQ community publicly known for the first time.
During her Reputation Tour, she delivered a passionate speech to the community to mark the beginning of Pride month.
“You know that that might be met with adversity from society,” she told fans. “So this month, and every month, I want to send out my love and respect to everybody who has been brave enough to be honest about the way they feel, to live their lives as they are, as they feel they should be, as they identify.
“And this is a month where I think we need to celebrate how far we’ve come, but we also need to acknowledge how far we still have left to go. I want to send my love and respect out to everybody who in their journey hasn’t yet felt comfortable enough to come out, and may you do that in your own time.
“May we end up in a world where everyone can live and love equally and no one has to be afraid to be vulnerable and say how they feel. When it comes to feelings and when it comes to love and searching for someone to spend your whole life with, it’s all just really really delicate.”
