“I just think it’s so cool and it’s time and why not?”
Tessa Thompson has weighed in on the potential romance between Valkyrie and Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel.
After Brie Larson’s female-led superhero film hit cinemas last month, fans were quick to ‘ship’ the two characters as a future couple. In the blockbuster, fans noticed queer undertones between the title character and Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch).
And in an interview with Rolling Stone last year, Thompson revealed that she filmed a scene for Thor: Ragnarok where a woman walks out of Valkyrie’s bedroom, heavily suggesting that they had been intimate with each other.
Because of this, and because of the lack of openly-queer characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans started to upload adorable fan art of the two and campaigned for them both to have a romantic connection in an upcoming film.
Larson even tweeted the photo alongside the caption, “We cute” to which Thompson responded: “WHAT. We so cute.”
Now, Thompson has officially commented on the romance, telling Los Angeles Times: “That’s wild! It didn’t even occur to me, legitimately, that it was necessarily a romantic thing. I don’t even know what happens in the canon in terms of those characters or if they ever intersect, but I just love the idea of more women Marvel characters getting to intersect.
“I just think it’s so cool and it’s time and why not? There’re so many compelling female characters inside of the MCU.”
Both characters will appear in Avengers: Endgame, which is due for release later this month.
The film will follow Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Captain America (Chris Evans) as they attempt to reverse the actions of Thanos, who decimated half the universe in Infinity War.
It will also star Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Danai Gurira, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Wong.
Deep breath for more star power: Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Josh Brolin, Evangeline Lilly, Jon Favreau, Letitia Wright and Paul Rudd.
Endgame is the culmination of 22 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and will reportedly be the final film for key actors in the franchise, such as Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans, the latter of which seemingly said farewell to his character last year.
Avengers: Endgame will be released worldwide on 24 April. Tickets are now available for pre-order.
