The latest episode of Drag Race All Stars 4 is one of the best instalments in the series to date.
After a relatively rocky premiere, in which the queens performed a salute to LGBTQ troops for an All Star-Spangled Variety Show, the series officially started its mothertucking engine for week two, and like we said in the headline – it’s one of the best episodes in All Stars HERstory.
For this week’s main challenge, the contestants formed separate super-groups for Hennies (with special guest star Stacey Layne Matthews), where they were tasked with writing lyrics and to perform epic choreographed numbers to the Lizzo-assisted tracks, Don’t Funk It Up and Everybody Say Love.
Some flunked, some served rap diva (Milk is shook!), and some were majah hits on the runway. Honestly, the whole episode left us gagged, and here’s why…
The draaaaahmaaah!
Gia Gunn revealed in the episode that she had a “big falling out” with her fellow All Stars 4 queen, Farrah Moan, when she confessed to her teammates: “At one point, I considered Farrah to be a close friend, but she tried to go about patching up a relationship between me and another person in an inappropriate way. But I hope we can talk things out because I’m sure that she’ll get the chop soon.” Later, Gia confronted Farrah and told her that she was the weakest link in the group, which led to one of the most legendary (and soon-to-be meme-worthy) clap backs, well, ever. “Well some of us don’t have to force storylines to get their airtime.” OOH HONEY! See? We were gagged.
The musical numbers
Drag Race has a formula, and it does it pretty damn well. Since All Stars 2, each season of the Emmy Award winning show has tasked the queens with writing their own lyrics and performing an epic choreographed number to an original track. We’ve been blessed with Read U Wrote U, Category Is, Kitty Girl, American and Drag Up Your Life – the latter of which propelled Bebe Zahara Benet into ICON status. This week, we were provided with Don’t Funk It Up and Everybody Say Love – both of which featured Lizzo on the chorus – and it included some more gag-worthy verses, particularly from Monét, Valentina, Naomi and Trinity. We’re already anticipating where both of these bops will end up on our Spotify 2019 end of year playlist…
The sickening panel of guest judges
Last week, American comedian Jenifer Lewis set the bar pretty fucking high when she appeared as a guest judge for the All Stars 4 premiere. After her stint, fans on social media hailed her as one of, if not the best guest star the show has ever seen. So how do you follow that? Luckily, we had two legendary performers make their judging debut this week, with Kacey Musgraves (who’s currently nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys), and the queen of crunk&b, Ciara. In the past, we’ve had several divas appear on the series, and not really impress us (we’re looking at you Shania), but both Kacey and Ciara embraced what the show is about, and delivered some genuinely good critiques. Also, we can’t get the image out of our heads of Ciara singing along to Born Naked… What a queen!
The runways!
Now this is how you imagine All Stars on the main stage. This week, we were positively gooped at the amount of fierce lewks that came down the runway, particularly from Valentina, Naomi Smalls, Monique Heart and Manila Luzon. The latter has appeared in three editions of Drag Race to date, and has served some of the best outfits the show has ever seen, but this week, Manila slammed our jaws to the fucking ground with a sparkly, lilac frock, and a stunning blonde up-do. She should’ve been safe for this look alone…
And that lip sync…
If you would’ve told us beforehand that the lip sync song was not going to be High Horse by Kacey Musgraves or Work, Level Up or Gimme Dat by Ciara, we would’ve concocted a change.org petition to have the show CANCELLED. But how could we be mad when its replacement was one of the best pop songs in history? Valentina and Monét left us slain, Buffy-style, when they battled it out to Ariana Grande’s 2016 anthem, Into You, which was criminally denied a top ten spot in both the UK and the US. (That’s another change.org petition we need to get started on.) Surprisingly, Valentina outperformed the latter and redeemed her status as the queen who can’t memorise lyrics, and cemented her status as one of the queens to watch out for on All Stars 4.
