Netflix has announced three exciting new editions for the forthcoming season of The Umbrella Academy.
On 24 February, the streamer revealed that Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and David Cross (Arrested Development) have joined the superhero drama’s fourth and final season, which is currently filming in Toronto.
Cross will star as Sy Grossman, “an upstanding, shy business owner and family man desperate to reconnect with his estranged daughter, who will stop at nothing to get her back.”
Real-life married couple Offerman and Mullally will play Drs. Gene and Jean Tibedeau, “a married pair of community college professors from New Mexico who wear sensible footwear and suffer from the most extreme case of deja vu this timeline has ever seen.”
Offerman recently garnered widespread critical acclaim for his performance as Bill in the third episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, which has since been hailed as one of the greatest TV episodes in history.
The aforementioned stars join returning cast members Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore.
Steve Blackman, showrunner, teased an “amazing” concluding chapter when the series was renewed last year.
“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago,” Blackman said in a statement.
“But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”
Netflix are yet to confirm an episode count for season four. However, multiple sources have claimed that it will be shortener than its predecessors, which all ran for 10 episodes.
Based on the Dark Horse Comics created and written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, the series follows a dysfunctional family of superpowered beings who reunite after their father’s mysterious death.
The first season of the superhero drama received widespread critical acclaim. Season two, which saw the titular team transported back in time to the 1960s, was met with even more praise for tackling issues such as racism, homophobia and feminism.
In its most recent instalment, Elliot Page’s character Number Seven/Viktor Hargreeves was rewritten as a trans man to reflect the star’s real-life transition.
During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Page commended Blackman and the team behind The Umbrella Academy for how they handled the change.
“When we first talked about it, [showrunner Steve Blackman] seemed really excited about incorporating it into the show,” Page explained, adding that trans author Thomas McBee “came on board and helped out and I feel proud of it and I’m excited for people to see it.”
The fourth season of The Umbrella Academy is expected to premiere in 2023.
