Showrunner Steve Blackman has opened up about the future of The Umbrella Academy universe.
On 8 August, fans were treated to the fourth and final season of the beloved superhero drama after a long two-year hiatus.
Since its release, the six episodes have received mixed reviews, with fans and critics split over the new storylines and how the show wrapped up.
Despite the varying critiques, many viewers have wondered about the future of The Umbrella Academy universe and if it will continue to be explored in a new series.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Blackman shared his thoughts on a potential spin-off, revealing to the news outlet that it’s up to Netflix.
“We’ve talked about it, and it’s a lot of variables in play – but I think there’s a great story in young Hazel [Cameron Britton] and Cha-Cha [Mary J Blige] down the road,” he continued.
“I think there’s wonderful stories also with some secondary characters. Then what’s wonderful about our world is we could crossover with our main characters anytime we want to because in a wonderful time-traveling world, you can end up with anyone anytime you want.”
Toward the end of his statement, Blackman reiterated that the ball is in Netflix’s court, adding that he would love to continue telling stories set in The Umbrella Academy universe.

“I hope this isn’t the end of Umbrella Academy. I hope there’s another iteration somewhere down the road,” he concluded.
Based on the Dark Horse Comics created and written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, the final season of The Umbrella Academy picks up after the explosive events of the season three finale, which saw the timeline undergoing a huge reset and the Hargreeves siblings separated.
The synopsis reads: “Stripped of their powers, each is left to fend for themselves and find a new normal — with wildly varying degrees of success.
“Yet the trappings of their uncanny new world prove too hard to ignore for very long. Their father Reginald, alive and well, has stepped out of the shadows and into the public eye, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire.
“A mysterious association known as The Keepers holds clandestine meetings believing the reality they’re living in is a lie and a great reckoning is coming.
“As these strange new forces conspire around them, the Umbrella Academy must come together one last time — and risk upsetting the shaky peace they’ve all endured so much to secure — to finally set things right.”
Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore reprise their roles, while Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally join the cast as Dr Gene Thibedeau and Dr Jean Thibedeau.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 is now available to stream on Netflix.
