Pop superstar Troye Sivan has opened up about feeling more connected to his femininity.
This year, the beloved talent has been booked, busy and showered with praise due his work in HBO’s The Idol and the release of his hit singles ‘Rush’ and ‘Got Me Started.’
In addition to the aforementioned achievements, Sivan also dropped his third studio album, Something To Give Each Other, in October – which received universal acclaim for its unapologetic queer lyrical content, outstanding pop production and the singer’s vocals.
The album also secured the number-one spot on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) album charts – making it Sivan’s first project to do so.
With 2023 coming to a close and Sivan showing no signs of slowing down his upward trajectory, GQ Australia announced the ‘Bloom’ singer as its Man of the Year.
While accepting the award, Sivan reflected on his monumental year and how he developed a deeper connection with his femininity.
“It’s not lost on me the irony of me winning man of the year when I did drag for the first time this year,” he said at the start of his speech.
“I feel more in touch with my feminity than ever, and I think it speaks to a point I’d really like to make, which is that my relationship with masculinity has been very strange my entire life.”
Sivan went on to say that growing up, he lived in a “grey area” where he wasn’t fully embraced by the girls or got along with any of the boys.
Despite his struggles, the Grammy-nominated talent was able to work through the grey area to reach a deeper understanding of his femininity and masculinity.

“Unlearning and de-programming all of that has taken so many years and lots of people,” he continued.
“I’m so lucky to have incredible women in my life. I pull so much from them, and their strength and power is something I’m in awe of. I also have incredible men in my life. And the biggest thing for me has been the queer people in my life that I’ve met along the way.”
Towards the end of his speech, Sivan admitted to being “over the moon” with how Something To Give Each Other has been received, adding: “It’s been exactly what I have always dreamt of for this album, and I’ve never really had that before.”
The beloved singer’s speech comes a month after he revealed that filming the ‘One Of Your Girls’ music video “unlocked” something in him.
In the visual, Sivan debuted his drag alter ego, channelling the likes of Janet Jackson, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. He also straddled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina hunk Ross Lynch during a sensual lap dance.
“I’m not saying that I’m non-binary. Or, I’ve honestly never really questioned my gender. But something was unlocked in me on the day of the ‘One Of Your Girls’ video shoot.” he revealed on TikTok
“I don’t wanna be her everyday. But I’m also like, it’s gonna be so boring to make a music video again without the tape and the f*cking corset and all that sh*t.”
