You star Hari Nef has been tapped to play trans icon and Andy Warhol’s muse Candy Darling in a new biopic.
According to a report from Deadline, the forthcoming feature will be written by Transparent writer Stephanie Kornick.
The film, which was first announced in 2019, is set to follow Darling’s childhood on Long Island leading up to her years as a prominent figure in the New York City art and theater scene.
Transparent’s Zackary Drucker is set to executive produce the film alongside Christian D Bruun, Louis Spiegler and Katerina Wolfe.
In a statement to the aforementioned news outlet, Nef opened up about her excitement for the film and described the role as a “pipe dream.”
“The dream was always to play Candy, and it is the honor of my life to get the chance to do it,” she said.
“Candy bridged the gap between her dreams and a reality stacked so consummately against her – a transexual glamour girl and indie icon reigning over Warhol’s Manhattan and Nixon’s America.
“She burned fast, and bright. More than anything, she wanted to be taken seriously as an actress. She taught girls like me how to dream – perhaps even how to be at all. She’s the blueprint.”

The Barbie star also gave insight into how she’s been preparing for the landmark role.
“In preparation for the role. I have consulted her friends, her diaries – every frame of celluloid I can find with her within it,” she explained.
“I’m calling up theatre archives to read the scripts of plays she performed downtown! Thankfully the producers have already amassed a treasure trove of archival riches. We’re attacking it! I’m so excited.”
In an additional statement to Deadline, Bruun echoed similar sentiments and described Nef’s involvement as “exciting in every way imaginable.”
“We all knew that Candy’s story deserved to be told on film, but it’s truly amazing to imagine what Hari will bring to the role and we’re incredibly excited about embarking on this journey with her,” he said.
Throughout the late 60s and early 70s, Darling amassed a dedicated fandom for her influential work in numerous Andy Warhol films – including Women In Revolt and Flesh.
The LGBTQ+ trailblazer also made an impact in the music industry and was the subject of various songs by American rock band The Velvet Underground and in Lou Reed’s hit single Walk on the Wild Side.
