The Borderlands director has opened up about cutting a popular gay wedding storyline from the film.

On 9 August, fans will finally be treated to the film adaptation of the beloved video game series from Gearbox Software.

Directed by Eli Roth, the movie is set to follow Lilith (Cate Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter who returns to her home planet of Pandora to search for the missing daughter of Atlas, the universe’s most powerful S.O.B.

The synopsis adds: “Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Kevin Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Arina Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a wiseass robot.

“Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.”

While the film is set to bring many aspects of the video game to life, an adorable wedding storyline between characters Wainwright Jakobs (Cheyenne Jackson) and Sir Hammerlock (Charles Babalola) will not be included.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Roth revealed that the character’s nuptials were shot but were later removed due to pacing.

“It was one of those things that we all loved. We loved the actors. The scene itself turned out great, but in the overall mission of the film, it felt like a detour that stopped the mood and then went back,” he explained.

For those unfamiliar with the games, Jakobs and Sir Hammerlock’s wedding took centre stage in the Borderlands 3 DLC Guns, Love, and Tentacles.

In the dynamic story, the two characters prepare for their special day, which is being held on the distant frozen planet Xylourgos.

However, the wedding is thrown into disarray when the leader of a fanatical cult takes an interest in the lovebirds.

While Jakobs and Sir Hammerlock’s wedding fiasco won’t be in the film’s final cut, Roth expressed his hopes to include the scene in a future Borderlands sequel.

“All you can say is, you know what? If we’re lucky to do another one, we know we got them for another one. And that’s a very hard thing, but ultimately, your responsibility is to the movie and to the story,” he teased to the news outlet.
